Mykola Katerynchuk: Angela Merkel gave a precise signal on the way to the future EU membership for Ukraine

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has paid her official visit to Ukraine today. Due to this event the Head of the European Party of Ukraine, the People’s Deputy of Ukraine Mykola Katerynchuk marked: “I consider that coming out of the results of the meeting between Angela Merkel and Victor Yushchenko Ukraine might ascertain the fact of strong progress in the issues of our country’s future membership in the European community.

In autumn 2008 a meeting Ukraine – EU under the France EU's rotating presidency and the prospective signing of a New Enhanced Agreement will take place. The German Chancellor stressed clearly that the importance of this Agreement means not only the enhanced cooperation but it could be classified as an Association Agreement. And I qualify this declaration as an essential step in economic relationship between Ukraine and the European Union”.

“For me as the leader of the political force promoting European values throughout Ukraine it is very essential that Germany being one of the founders of the European Union not only considers Ukraine to be an important partner, but intends for friendly relationship. At the same time the European future of the country will depend on each of us. Due to this fact the European Party of Ukraine is standing for political and economic development of our country in the best traditions of the European democracy”- he stressed.

“At the same time I am upset that not all representatives of the political forces were able to have an opportunity of a constructive dialogue with a high-ranking official guest. The fact that the leader of the so-called opposition Victor Yanukovich didn’t meet with Angela Merkel is the witness of this force’s passive position towards Ukraine’s support in its euro – integration process.

Improvement of the citizens’ living standards and its raising to the European standards are only rhetoric for the Party of Regions. Today’s opposition does not want and is not going to do any practical steps in this direction”- Mykola Katerynchuk added.
