Six EU Member States Have Ratified the Lisbon Treaty
On 21 March Bulgaria became the sixth EU member to ratify the new Treaty of Lisbon.vBulgaria joined Hungary, Slovenia, Malta, Romania and France who have already ratified the Treaty.
In a special statement commenting on this event, Slovenian EU Presidency welcomed the ratification saying “the Treaty is an important instrument which will bring Europe a new impetus and enable it to meet the challenges of the 21th century”.
“Every ratification is an important part of a mosaic, which needs to be built completely”, the Presidency adds.
EU Lisbon Treaty, signed to 13 December last year, has become a compromise between EU members that have ratified EU Constitutional Treaty, and those that rejected the document or did not start the ratification process.
The Treaty maintains some essential elements of the Constitutional Treaty but does not mention the very concept of the “EU Constitution” or EU state symbols.
The new Treaty should be ratified in all 27 EU members with EU leaders expecting the document to enter into force on 1 January 2009.
The way of ratification depends on decision by each EU member state, with the only exception of Ireland which has to put the issue on the referendum according to its national constitution.
