Mr.Katerynchuk:We need an effective Constitution which will work for people

There is an only answer to the question what kind of Constitution we should have: we need an effective Constitution which will work for people. Because Constitution is a public agreement, an agreement between authorities and society”, Mykola Katerynchuk, the MP from the faction “Our Ukraine – People’s Self-Defence” told yesterday during the TV program broadcast “Svoboda slova” (“Freedom of speech”).

“If the opposition is not interested in the constitutional process, then it means that they are not interested in the way the reforms for improvement of citizens’ living standards will be held”, he underlined, having reminded “when we were in the opposition, we were fighting for every single word change to the Constitution. We were the minority, but we understood that it would inevitably influence on the Ukrainian citizens”.

“Constitutional amendments concern not only of the power division between the President, the Prime Minister and the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, but they deal with a stable political system which will allow to hold necessary reforms. Politicians have either to be involved in this process or resign their positions”, Mr.Katerynchuk stressed.

“The Constitutional question is the question of an effective authority. It should meet the needs of Ukrainian citizens and it should be under their control ”, the MP underlined.

“In 2004 we elected the President with certain range of authorities, and today these authorities are quite different. In 2005 we planned to change these disgraceful norms, because the democracy we obtained on Maidan, and which is used now by all the political forces, needs to be protected. Today there exists neither rule of law nor laws enabling every citizen of Ukraine to feel protected”, Mr.Katerynchuk remarked.

“We have to work it out both in the National Constitutional council and in the Parliament. And society has to follow the amendments made to each item, especially amendments to the second part, stipulating rights and duties of Ukrainian citizens, which are declarative for the present moment do not work for citizens. But I am convinced, that there are already politicians ready to work out this second part”, Mr.Katerynchuk emphasized.
